Evaluation Task 4 - Who is the target audience?

- we have made a fake facebook account for a 19 year old called Chris Turner, his interests are horror and thriller movies and he loves going to the cinema to see friends, his favourite type of horror is with an explanation of what is happening.
- we feel that this particular person is our ideal target audience as it the average age of gamers and all of  his interests listed imply his love for horror films and the quotes and one liners as shown by his quote from the Shining.

- the pie chart shows that from the age ranges asked going from 18-40 it is clear that a majority of 18-20 year olds would watch the film and that it clearly appeals less to the older generations e.g. the 30-40 years olds.

IMDB film profile comparison:

-The main target audience is late teens to young adults who enjoy a good horror and thriller as well as the thrill of watching a victim who they want to see be killed, this could include teenage girls as the victim is a male which would then imply that couples would go see this together as the girls would make their boyfriends go in case they get scared

-the secondary audience is anyone who enjoys a good thriller and/or horror that will see our movie and is less focused on the victim and more on the kill, this could include the more violence enjoying older generation

-People would most likely see our film on gaming consoles such as Xbox and Play Station in order for it to reach a wider audience range for less as it would sell for roughly £4-£5 depending on the console. We wouldn’t use a cinema as our film is too low budget and wouldn’t make the money back but we will take the film to festival such as the BFI London film festival and we can also raise money to take the film to festivals such as Sundance or Cannes. Ideally we would like young adults to watch it or people in their early twenties who would want to watch our film as it is a niche market for our type of thriller that portrays a certain social realism of modern day teenagers as it not only shows what they are capable of but the situations that would arise. Audience like this kind of sub-genre as it is an insight into crime and how easy it is to get away with if you know the right things to do.

Opening Sequence - Version 1

This version of the film includes the rules we added in however due to the low sound quality of the added clips and poor quality of camera we have cut this from the final version of our film

Rules added to film:

The video above shows the process I used to create the rules to be inserted into the film after we had finished filming, the effect was done to show the killer as giving himself tips on killing and the video clearly explains what we aimed to get out of creating rules and also what they were going to be used for

The video above shows all of the rules that were filmed which were 8 in total, even though not all of them were used it was still worth filming all 8 just to ensure we covered all of the areas we needed

Why young people like horror films

Why young people like horror films:
Research shows that there are 3 main reasons as to why young people watch horror films:

1. tension which is created through mystery, suspense, gore, terror, or shock and allows people to feel the suspense
2. relevance as the film or topic may relate to personal relevance, cultural meaningfulness or the fear of death
3. unrealism

A clear reason viewed by many as being accurate is that we watch violent and frightening films as a way of purging negative emotions and/or as a way to relieve pent-up aggression as we have no other way to do so in real life so if we watch this kind of film it allows an empathy link that relieves your aggression and allows you to appreciate the genre as it makes you calmer in some way

Different people like watching for different reasons and no theory has been put forward that explains everyone’s motives and reasoning however it is clear that there is some twisted part of people that likes viewing this type of genre and I would not say that they enjoy it but I would use the word intrigue as people like to see things that open up the world for them as they know that they themselves are never going to have something along the lines of this happen to them however the movie that they are watching creates a bridge into this world where more dark feelings and horrible events are accessible on a regular basis.
